Some additional pieces of information:

  *  The server is a Linux machine.
  *  I'm browsing it from a Mac OS X 10.5.8 machine using Safari 4.0.3
  *  I get similar behavior from FireFox on a Win XP Home machine, except that it displays the alt= text instead of a broken image icon.
